New Jersey Lottery and Council on Compulsive Gambling New Jersey Collaborate to ‘Unmask the Hidden Epidemic’
TRENTON (March 3, 2026) – The New Jersey Lottery, in partnership with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, Inc. (CCGNJ), proudly observe March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM). This year, the focus is on the theme “Shine a Light and Take a Stand: Unmasking the Hidden Epidemic,” which underscores the importance of bringing attention to problem gambling as a significant public health issue.
As a supporter of the National Council on Problem Gambling’s (NCPG) national theme “Caring Communities, Stronger Futures,” the New Jersey Lottery acknowledges the essential role of community driven efforts in addressing gambling-related harm and creating sustainable support systems.
“Responsible Gaming is not just a topic for March, it’s a daily commitment,” said James Carey, Executive Director of the New Jersey Lottery. “By collaborating with organizations like the CCGNJ, we aim to ensure that New Jersey residents are aware of the resources available to them, so they can enjoy gaming responsibly and seek help when needed.”
The CCGNJ wants the public to know there is a growing need for awareness and support. Problem gambling is often a “hidden addiction,” lacking the visible symptoms associated with other disorders and often burdened by stigma.
“Problem gambling is a challenge that many face in silence,” said Luis del Orbe, Executive Director of the CCGNJ. “Our mission is to break that silence by educating the public and providing the necessary resources for recovery. There is no shame in seeking help, and we are here to support every step of the way.”
The New Jersey Lottery remains committed to promoting responsible gaming through continuous efforts, including:
- Word Lottery Association (WLA) Level 4 Recertification: Demonstrating our ongoing dedication to Responsible Gaming programs. This certification is the most comprehensive measure of responsible play among lotteries in the industry. The Lottery was recertified in January 2026.
- Community Engagement: Partnering with sports teams and venues like the New York Red Bulls, Rutgers Basketball, NJ Devils, Trenton Thunder, and New Jersey Motorsports Park to integrate responsible gaming messages into their events and platforms.
- Public Awareness Initiatives: Launching weekly social media videos and running responsible gaming graphics during sports events and on digital platforms.
